In a time of crisis, the hardest thing to do is to be still and know. The truth is, it is not easy to calm down and intellectually understand that things will be ok - at the same time.
Rembrandt's dynamic Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee (1633) is his only painted seascape. Rembrandt powerfully expresses the striking collision between nature and human fallibility. Previously located at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the masterpiece was stolen in 1990 and remains missing to this day.
Imagine you are one of the disciples, frantically trying to steady and save the ship from destruction and their ultimate death. Meanwhile, Jesus is fast asleep below in the stern. Blinded by fear, they wake him and cry, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" (Mark 4:38). At that moment, the disciples did not remember the miracles previously witnessed. Jesus emerges from below and calms the crashing waves with just three words: "Peace, be still." The winds cease, and the seas are instantly calmed (v.39).
When we remember the faithfulness of God, we are filled with inexpressible hope and joy. We innately know that things will work out.
What storm are you fighting? Have faith, look to Jesus, know that He will take care of you, and speak peace into all of your troubles. He is well aware of the storms you face and ready to speak peace into your situation.
Trust Him.
